Search for the best AI girlfriend app and most of what ranks is a list of adult products. If that is what you want, this is not the list. This one is for people who want a character: someone with a story already in motion, who texts first, who remembers what happened between you, who holds a point of view when you push, and whose app says in writing what it will and will not do.
It is written by Nepenthe Play, which makes six of the characters below. We say so where it matters. Every claim about other products was checked on their own pages on September 21, 2026, and where an app does not publish a policy or a price, we say that rather than repeat what review sites guess.
What people are looking for, honestly
The market is real. AI companion apps generated $82 million in the first half of 2025 and were on track for more than $120 million for the year, with 220 million cumulative downloads [1]. And most people are not choosing deliberately: MIT researchers who analyzed 1,506 posts in a 27,000-member community about AI relationships found that only 6.5% of members had gone looking for one [2].
So the first decision is not which app. It is whether you want a story, a companion, or a game. A story ends. A companion checks in. A game has a cast and routes. The list is sorted by that.
Six AI girlfriends with a story
These are ours. Each is written: a personality, a situation already in motion, and a reason she keeps talking to you. Each has a phone. She texts you first, sends photos, and lets you read her inner thoughts, the things she is thinking but not saying. You answer in your own words, and she pushes back, keeps secrets, and changes her mind only when you give her a reason.

Nomi is the strongest companion in the set. Proactive messages are documented with a frequency setting, generated from what the Nomi is doing, and the wiki is honest that turning them off means she stops thinking while you are away [3]. Its stance is on its homepage: "unfiltered and uncensored" [4]. That is a clear choice, stated plainly; it is not this list's choice.
Replika has been around since 2017: 3D avatar, calls, selfies, proactive check-ins, and a memory tab you can edit [5][6]. The romantic partner relationship status unlocks with Pro, along with unblurred romantic selfies [7]. The terms prohibit pornographic uploads and bar impersonating a real person [8].
Kindroid publishes the most detailed memory system in the category and the most permissive policy: its guidelines, updated August 15, 2026, say it is not implementing a filter on the AI itself, with red lines only around imminent harm and minors [9][10]. Web pricing starts at $13.99 a month [11].
Character.AI has millions of user-made characters and free unlimited messaging, and its help center is unambiguous: pornographic content is against the terms of service and will not be supported at any point in the future [12][13]. Characters do not message first. Open-ended chat for under-18s ended in November 2025 [14].
Talkie is the clearest SFW policy we found. Its community guidelines prohibit "both explicit sexual content and content with suggestive or implicit sexual undertones," listing "pornographic or sexually explicit materials in any form" [15]. Its FAQ is also unusually candid about memory: "AI memory capacity is technically limited, causing older conversations to be 'forgotten'" [16].
PolyBuzz claims over 20 million characters and prohibits content that "depicts pornography or sexual acts," 18+ only [17]. Its App Store rating carries a mature-themes advisory, so the published rule and the browsing experience differ; know both [18].
Moescape is anime fandom with a PG-13 ceiling in writing: "Obscene, vulgar and pornographic content are not allowed" [19]. Plus is $9.99 a month, Pro $14.99 [20].
Linky markets an AI girlfriend or boyfriend on its store listing, and its terms bar "obscene, offensive, pornographic" content, with the service limited to 18+ on iOS [21]. We could not read its pricing or memory features from an official page, and user reports describe an in-app content gate, so treat it as SFW by policy rather than by promise.
The ones we left out, and why
Apps that market themselves primarily on adult content were excluded. So were apps whose sites we could not read at all: Anima and Paradot render nothing to a reader and their terms pages return errors, so we could not verify pricing, memory or policy for either. Zeta's terms permit sexual content inside an adults-only mode, which is a different product from the one this list describes.
The ten-minute test
Disagree. Ask her for something that conflicts with what she wants, then give her a real reason to reconsider. A good character holds her view, weighs the reason, and does not narrate your reaction.
Plant and return. Tell her one small thing early, change the subject, and bring it up later without repeating it.
Leave. Close the app and come back tomorrow. On products that initiate, something should have happened that connects to what you were doing.
