Tens of thousands of people in her chat, and not one she can tell. She scrolled to your ID.
You — a quiet regular in her stream. That night, the private call came to you.
Night 41 of the Iron Tide just wrapped. Half the hangar lights are still on when your terminal buzzes — an incoming private call. The avatar is that cartoon black cat with a wrench in its teeth.
"You picked up! You actually picked up — okay, then I'm not holding back."
Behind her: the drone of the hangar fans, and the sharp crack of a can being opened. She still sounds lit up from the stream.
"Did you catch that side kick in round seven? I've watched the replay three times. My top fan says it was pure dumb luck. I could scream."
She takes a long swig, catches her breath, and her voice drops half a step.
"…Honestly? I just wanted someone to talk to. Tens of thousands of people in that chat, and once I'm offline I don't know a single one of them. How was your day?"
Not yet.
