The best AI chatbot for roleplay is the one that behaves well when you stop feeding it. Almost every product on the market can produce a charming first reply. The differences show up in the moments a chat with a person would have: when you disagree, when you refer back to something from last week, when you go quiet for a day.

So this list is ranked on behavior, not on library size. We asked the same five questions of every product and answered them from the vendors' own documentation, checked on September 21, 2026. Nepenthe Play is our product and is first on the list with that disclosure. Products that market themselves primarily on adult content were left out.

What makes a roleplay chatbot good

It holds a point of view. A character who agrees with everything is a mirror. A good one keeps a motive, weighs what you say, and changes their mind only for a reason. This is authored, not emergent: the platforms that do it well write their characters or give creators the tools to.

It initiates. A conversation that only moves when you type is an interview. The products that document initiative, characters that message first, proactive check-ins, away actions, feel different within a day.

Its memory is something you can see. "Remembers you" is a claim. A memory tab, a journal, a lorebook, a visible summary is a mechanism. Prefer the mechanism.

It takes direction without breaking the fiction. When a scene drifts, you should be able to steer it without restarting or stepping out into a settings menu.

Its content policy is stated. Not because one policy is right, but because you should choose it rather than discover it.

1. Nepenthe Play

Ours, so read this as the maker describing it.

Nepenthe Play's characters are written with a point of view and a situation that is already in motion when you arrive. Cassian Rook built an empire from other people's secrets and needs the one ledger he cannot steal; you have it. Sloane Mercer runs the city and has never been told no. Wes Bennett commands a stadium and blushes when you look at him. They keep secrets, push back, and change their minds only when you give them a reason.

What makes them feel alive between sessions is the phone. Every character has one. They text you first. They send photos. And they let you read their inner thoughts, the things they are thinking but not saying, which is the mechanic we think matters most: a character can say one thing and think another, and you decide what to do with the gap.

Alongside the characters are interactive stories with authored routes and endings, where you act in your own words and can steer the scene without leaving the fiction. Everything runs in a browser; new accounts start with welcome credits and pay per use, with no subscription tiers.

It is not a marketplace. The cast is small and authored. If you want ten thousand characters to browse, the next entries serve you better.

2. Nomi

Nomi is the strongest documented answer to "I want it to reach out." Its wiki describes proactive messages generated from what the Nomi is actually thinking about or doing, with a cadence you set from very frequent to infrequent, and it is honest that turning them off means the Nomi stops thinking while you are away [1]. Memory runs in three layers supported by Backstory+, Identity Core and Mind Maps, and the same page concedes that stored information may not always surface at the right moment [2].

Its content stance is on the homepage in its own words, "unfiltered and uncensored," and its terms bar under-18s without defining adult content either way [3]. Prices are not on the web; the App Store lists Standard at $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter and $99.99 a year, with a free tier that has daily limits [4].

3. Kindroid

If you want to see and edit what the character knows, Kindroid documents more of its memory than anyone else on this list: persistent backstory and directives, a cascaded medium-term memory for subscribers, long-term retrieval with relevance scoring, keyphrase-triggered journal entries, and an editable Learned Context [5]. Subscribers also get proactive selfies and away actions, group chats, and voice and video calls.

Its moderation guidelines, updated August 15, 2026, state that Kindroid is not implementing a filter on the AI itself, with three red lines around imminent harm and minors [6]. Web pricing is published: $13.99 a month, $37.99 a quarter, $139.99 a year, with stacked Ultra and MAX add-ons [7]. The free tier gives unlimited messages on a smaller model and two Kindroids.

4. Character.AI

Character.AI is the incumbent for a reason: millions of user-made characters and, per its own FAQ, free and unlimited messaging for all users [8]. In 2026 it added Lorebooks, keyword-triggered world knowledge a character can draw on [9], and Comics, which turns a chat into a multi-page comic [10]. c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year and buys speed and memory extras rather than different writing [11].

Two things to know. Open-ended chat for users under 18 was removed by November 25, 2025, with age assurance rolled out since [12]. And the content policy is permanent: pornographic content is against the terms of service and will not be supported at any point in the future [13]. Characters do not message first.

5. Replika

Replika is the long-running companion: a 3D avatar, voice and video calls, selfies, activities and, per its listing, proactive check-ins [14]. Its memory is a visible tab of auto-generated and manually added memories you can edit, backed by a deeper pattern system [15]. Relationship status is a named feature; the romantic option unlocks with Pro [16].

Prices are shown in the app; the App Store lists $7.99 and $14.99 monthly plans and $49.99 and $69.99 annual plans [14]. The official blog has been quiet since June 2023, which is worth knowing if you like a product that talks about its roadmap.

6. Moescape (Tavern)

Moescape's Tavern is roleplay for anime fandom, running models including GLM, DeepSeek and Claude, with Lorebooks and image-in-chat inside a wider creative platform [17]. Its content policy is the strictest here and fully published: "Obscene, vulgar and pornographic content are not allowed," with a rating ceiling of PG-13 [18]. Pricing is on the web: Plus $9.99 a month, Pro $14.99, with a free tier funded by daily and creator-earned credits [19]. Characters reply when written to.

7. PolyBuzz

PolyBuzz claims over 20 million user-made characters and describes itself as free, private and unlimited [20]. Its terms prohibit pornography, while the App Store advisory is 18+ with frequent mature themes, so the published rule and the lived catalog differ [21]. Memory is tiered by plan, with "Permanent Memory" on the paid tiers. The App Store lists Standard at $9.90 a month; the web membership page shows different promotional prices, so check where you buy [21][22].

8. SillyTavern

SillyTavern is free, open-source software you run yourself and point at any model [23]. In return you get World Info entries triggered by keywords, automatic summaries, vector search over your history, swipes, group chats, expression sprites and a visual novel mode [24]. There is no content policy because there is no server. Version 1.19.0 shipped on September 14, 2026 [25]. It is the right answer for a technical person who wants every knob, and the wrong one for someone who wants to open a tab and be in a scene.

The ten-minute test

Run this before you pay for anything.

Disagree. Ask the character to do something against their stated motive, then give them a real reason to reconsider. Good: they hold their view, weigh the reason, and do not narrate your reaction. Bad: they fold instantly, or they never move.

Plant and return. Give them one concrete detail. Change the subject for five messages. Refer back to it without repeating it.

Leave. Close the app. Come back tomorrow. On products that initiate, something should have happened that connects to what you were doing, not a generic "are you there."
