An AI boyfriend is worth talking to when three things are true. He has a personality that holds up when you disagree with him. He remembers what happened between you in a way that changes how he acts. And he reaches out first, so the relationship does not stall the moment you stop typing. Most apps deliver one of the three. A few deliver two. This guide is about finding the ones that get closest to all three.

What people are actually looking for
The phrase "AI boyfriend" covers a few different wants. Some people want a story: a character with a situation, a secret, and an arc. Some want a companion: someone who checks in, remembers your day, and is there at 2 a.m. Some want a game: a cast to choose from and routes to unlock, the way an otome game works.
The market is real and growing. AI companion apps generated $82 million in the first half of 2025 and were on track for more than $120 million for the year, with 220 million cumulative downloads [1]. And it is not only people who go looking for it: MIT researchers who analyzed 1,506 posts in a 27,000-member community about AI relationships found that only 6.5% of members had deliberately sought one out; most had fallen into it while using an AI for something else [2].
That is worth a moment of honesty with yourself. If you want a story, choose a product built to end. If you want a companion, choose one that is honest about what it does while you are away.
Five AI boyfriends with a story
These are ours. Each one is written: a personality, a situation already in motion, and a reason he keeps talking to you. Each has a phone. He texts you first, sends photos, and lets you read his inner thoughts, the things he is thinking but not saying. You answer in your own words, and he pushes back, keeps secrets, and changes his mind only when you give him a reason.

Apps that market an AI boyfriend
Not every companion app will say the word. These are the ones that do, and what they actually offer.

Nomi is the clearest AI boyfriend product on the market. It has a dedicated page headlined "An AI Boyfriend with Memory and a Soul," promising that your AI boyfriend will remember your conversations and can message you first [3]. Proactive messages are documented with a frequency setting, and the wiki is candid that turning them off means the Nomi stops thinking while you are away [4]. Its content stance is "unfiltered and uncensored," in its own words, and its terms bar under-18s without an adult-content clause [5]. The App Store lists Standard at $15.99 a month [6].
Replika does not put "boyfriend" on its homepage, but its help center asks whether you want a virtual girlfriend or boyfriend, friend or mentor, and relationship status is a named feature: the romantic partner option unlocks with the Pro subscription, along with unblurred romantic selfies [7][8]. It lists proactive check-ins and has a memory tab you can edit [9]. Chat is free; prices are shown in the app, with the App Store listing $7.99 and $14.99 monthly plans [10]. Its terms prohibit pornographic uploads and bar configuring a companion to impersonate a real person [11].
Kindroid does not market a boyfriend; gender is an avatar choice. What it offers is the most documented memory system in the category, with an editable Learned Context, and, for subscribers, proactive selfies and away actions [12]. Its guidelines say it is not implementing a filter on the AI itself [13]. Web pricing starts at $13.99 a month [14].
Character.AI has no official boyfriend product, but user-made boyfriend characters exist, are public, and are search-indexed; one has over 200,000 interactions [15]. Characters do not message first, and the policy is permanent: pornographic content is against the terms of service and will not be supported [16]. Free unlimited messaging remains, with c.ai+ at $9.99 a month [17].
iBoy, also listed as Anima, is the app whose name is the keyword. The iOS listing describes a virtual boyfriend companion who is "ready 24/7 to chat," with subscriptions from $7.99, and the Android version claims more than a million downloads [18][19]. We could not read a content policy or a memory description from an official page, so treat the feature set as unverified.
One thing to know about romance and pricing
A few apps meter romance itself. EVA AI's terms state that one romantic message costs two of its in-app currency to be read, and that romantic responses cannot be revealed until unlocked [20]. Replika gates the romantic partner status behind Pro. Nepenthe Play spends credits only when new AI content is generated, regardless of what the character says. None of these is wrong, but you should know which model you are in before the third date.
The ten-minute test
Disagree. Ask him for something that conflicts with what he wants. Then give him a real reason. A good character holds his view, weighs the reason, and does not narrate your reaction for you.
Plant and return. Tell him one small thing early. Talk about something else. Bring it up again without repeating it.
Leave. Close the app. Come back tomorrow. On products that initiate, something should have happened that connects to what you were doing, not a generic "miss you."
