Interactive Story Games You Can Play in a Browser (2026)

Seven interactive story games and text adventures that run in a browser with nothing to install: authored stories with endings, AI-driven worlds, and the free classics, checked in September 2026.

By Nepenthe Play Editorial10 min read

Interactive story games come in two families, and the family matters more than the title. In an authored story a writer built the routes and the endings; your job is to find your way through them. In a generated story an AI improvises the world as you go; your job is to keep it interesting. Both run in a browser now. They do not feel alike.

This list covers seven you can open right now with nothing to install, one great one you cannot, and how to tell which family you actually want. Nepenthe Play is our product and is first with that disclosure. Everything else was checked on official pages on September 21, 2026.

1. Nepenthe Play

Ours, so read this as the maker describing it.

Nepenthe Play's stories are authored, with a cast, routes and endings a writer decided on, but you do not choose from a menu. You type what you do or say, in your own words, and the story responds to that. When a scene drifts, you can give it a direction while playing, without restarting and without stepping out of the fiction. The story advances on its own when you let it and takes your steer when you do not.

By Saturday, his name is gone from the class roster and there is a sewing machine in his bedroom. His mother still invites you in for breakfast. She just cannot remember whose friend you are. Beneath the reservoir lies an old town with unfinished paperwork, and the few people who still remember are running out of time. You have a bike, a pen, and his name. The catalog runs from small-town mystery to corporate thriller to dark romance. Unclaimed is fall 1987 and a best friend whose name vanishes from the class roster. The Third Body is 1979 marshland and two deaths already written off as accidents. Every Promise Binds is a dark romance with four routes and four endings. Everything runs in a browser; new accounts start with welcome credits and pay per use.

The Third BodyRural Noir · Institutional FailureFall 1979, Sedge County: thirty miles of rain-drenched marshland. Two girls died earlier this fall—both written off by local authorities as accidents. This morning, a third body turns up in the mud. As the county's hearse driver, you have no badge, just a camera, tape measure, and eleven exposures left. Out here, rain erases crime scenes in hours. 2. Choice of Games

Choice of Games publishes text-only interactive novels, "hundreds of thousands of words and hundreds of choices, without graphics or sound effects," in the publisher's own description [1]. Every title on the site has a Play Online button, so they run in a browser without an install [2]. A player reads about a fifth of a book's words on one playthrough, which is why they replay.

Sixteen titles are free to finish, supported by ads, including Heroes Rise: The Prodigy and Choice of the Petal Throne; paying removes the ads [3]. Per-title prices for the rest are shown on each game's page. If you want the deepest authored branching available in a browser, this is it, with the trade that you choose from written options rather than typing.

3. Fallen London

Fallen London is Failbetter's Victorian city stolen by bats, "an immersive, text-based adventure game that you can play for free in any web browser," running since 2009 with 4.5 million handcrafted words [4]. It is authored and enormous, but it is a world rather than a story: there is no ending, and an optional membership called Exceptional Friends of the Bazaar adds monthly premium stories. Pick it when you want somewhere to return to for months.

4. Hidden Door

Hidden Door dropped its waitlist on January 5, 2026, so anyone can play [5]. Its stories are generated, but inside licensed and public-domain worlds with a narrator, from Sherlock Holmes and Dracula to Charles Stross's Saturn's Children, and they are short and finite: a scene runs five to eight minutes and a story one to three scenes [6]. The free tier gives unlimited stories and turns across five catalog worlds; Fan is $7.99 a month for the full catalog [7]. Content tops out at PG-13 with Mature worlds labeled.

5. AI Dungeon

AI Dungeon is the generated sandbox: type Do, Say or Story and the model continues, with a documented memory system, story cards and scripting for people who want to shape it [8]. The free Wanderer tier has a 4,000-token context and 25 memory-bank slots; paid tiers start at $14.99 a month [9]. It does not end, and it does not move unless you move it. If that sounds like freedom, it is; if it sounds like work, look at the authored entries.

6. The Uncle Who Works for Nintendo

A free Twine game on itch.io that plays in the browser: "You are 11 years old. You are sleeping over at your best friend's house," and an uncle who works for Nintendo is coming at midnight [10]. Five endings, a narrative horror story, and one of the best single sittings you can have in this format for the price of nothing.

7. Perchance AI RPG

Perchance's AI RPG is free, unlimited, and needs no sign-up, funded by ads [11]. It is a generated sandbox with no saved data by design, so nothing persists between sessions. Good for an hour, not for a campaign.

The one that is not in a browser

80 Days, inkle's reinvention of the Verne novel, is one of the finest interactive stories ever made: "hundreds of journeys, thousands of routes," and every journey unique [12]. It runs on Switch, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, at $12.99 on Steam, and not in a browser [13]. We list it because you will see it recommended everywhere, and because it is worth an install.

Which family do you want

Ask what you did the last time you got bored with one of these.

If you got bored because nothing happened and you had to invent it, you want authored: Nepenthe Play, Choice of Games, 80 Days.

If you got bored because you hit the rails and could see the menu, you want generated, or authored-but-typed: Nepenthe Play, AI Dungeon, Hidden Door.

If you got bored because it ended, you want a world: Fallen London.

If you want a story with an ending that still lets you act in your own words, that middle is where we live.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best interactive story game to play in a browser?
It depends on whether you want to read or to act. To read a long branching novel, Choice of Games. To act in your own words inside an authored story with endings, Nepenthe Play, with the disclosure that we make it. To wander an endless world, Fallen London. To improvise, AI Dungeon.
Are there free interactive story games online?
