AI Dungeon Alternatives: 8 Games Like AI Dungeon (2026)

Eight AI Dungeon alternatives for text adventures, compared on what each one replaces: authored stories, tabletop rules, memory controls, price and content policy. Checked September 2026.

By Nepenthe Play Editorial13 min read

Every AI Dungeon alternative worth trying replaces one specific thing about AI Dungeon. Know which thing before you pick.

AI Dungeon is an open sandbox. You type Do, Say or Story, and the model continues. That freedom is the whole appeal, and it is also why people leave: an open world only goes somewhere if you take it there. The alternatives below fall into three groups. Some give the story a shape, with authored routes and endings. Some give it rules, with dice, combat and a party. Some keep the sandbox but change who runs it, what it costs, or what it allows.

This comparison is published by Nepenthe Play, which is on the list. We say so where it comes up. Everything else was checked against each vendor's own site, help center or pricing page on September 21, 2026.

What AI Dungeon does well

Start here, because the alternatives are only worth it if they fix a problem AI Dungeon cannot.

AI Dungeon's memory is more structured than its reputation suggests. The official help page describes two systems: an automatic summary that compresses the story every 15 actions, and a Memory Bank that stores summaries of six consecutive actions and retrieves them by similarity [1]. On top of that sit Plot Essentials, which are always in context, Story Cards, which load when a keyword appears, and an Author's Note for tone [2]. Scenario authors can write JavaScript scripts with hooks on input, context and output, each sandboxed to 16 MB and two seconds [3].

Its tiers are published in full [4]:

TierPriceContextMemory BankCredits per month
WandererFree4,000 tokens25 memories0
Journey$14.99/mo8,000 tokens100 memories760
Legend$29.99/mo16,000 tokens200 memories1,650
Mythic$49.99/mo32,000 tokens400 memories2,750
Ultimate$99.99/mo32,000+ tokens800 memories5,200

And its content position is unusually clear: private, unlisted adventures made for personal use are not moderated, while published content is rated Everyone, Teen, Mature or Unrated [5].

So if your complaint is "it forgot the key," the fix may be a Story Card. If your complaint is "nothing happens unless I make it happen," no setting fixes that, and the list below is for you.

1. Nepenthe Play

Ours, so read this as the maker describing it.

Nepenthe Play's stories are the opposite of a sandbox. Each one is written: a premise, a cast with motives, routes, and endings that are actually reachable. Unclaimed is a 1987 small-town mystery about a friend whose name vanishes from the class roster. Heirs seats you at the right hand of an 82-year-old patriarch on the night the succession starts. Every Promise Binds is a dark romance with four routes and four endings.

UnclaimedComing-of-Age · Small-Town HorrorFall 1987, Keeler. Your best friend Denny never made it home. By Saturday, his name is gone from the class roster and there is a sewing machine in his bedroom. His mother still invites you in for breakfast. She just cannot remember whose friend you are. Beneath the reservoir lies an old town with unfinished paperwork, and the few people who still remember are running out of time. You have a bike, a pen, and his name. Keep saying it before nobody knows who you are looking for.

What keeps it from being a choose-your-own-adventure book is how you act. There are no menus. You type what you do or say, in your own words, and the story responds to that. When a scene drifts, you can give it a direction while playing, without restarting and without stepping out of the fiction. The story advances on its own when you let it and takes your steer when you do not.

That is the trade. You give up "anything can happen" and get "something will happen, and it will end." If you have ever opened AI Dungeon, typed three actions and closed it because the world was politely waiting for you, this is the fix.

HeirsFamily Drama · Corporate PowerAmbrose Merrick is eighty-two and still commands Coldspring Group from the head of the table. He built his four children's names out of an old word for inheritance, and never let one of them inherit a single thing. The company seal is lent, not given—signed in his name by day and returned before dawn. Sixteen years after you walked away, he summons you back to Wrenmouth and hands you the seat at his right hand. Here in the shadow of family power, nobody says what they want, every promise has a price, and you didn't come back for the chair—you came back to settle a debt only this table can pay.StartAmbrose Merrick is eighty-two and still commands Coldspring Group from the head of the table. Everything runs in a browser. New accounts start with welcome credits and pay per use after that; there is no subscription tier to choose. What it is not: a place to write your own campaign from scratch. Creation tools for characters and text adventures are opening to players, but today the catalog is authored.

2. Friends & Fables

Friends & Fables is what you want when "AI RPG" means the R and the P and the G. Its AI game master, Franz, runs tactical turn-based combat on D&D 5e rules, with maps, a virtual tabletop, character and location art, and parties of up to six players [6]. The platform started as a Discord bot in March 2023 and relaunched standalone in July 2024 [7].

Pricing is public. Free gives 25 turns a day, three-player campaigns and 4,000 characters of custom context. Starter is $19.95 a month with unlimited standard turns and four players; Pro is $29.95; Legend is $39.95 with six players and 13,500 characters of context [8]. Custom instructions cannot override game mechanics such as dice rolls, which is the point: the rules are the rules.

On content, the public policy bans explicit sexual imagery and nudity but says mature themes are fine, citing Game of Thrones and Baldur's Gate, and private worlds are not moderated [9].

3. Hidden Door

Hidden Door dropped its waitlist on January 5, 2026 and is now open to anyone [10]. It plays stories inside licensed and public-domain worlds, from Sherlock Holmes and Dracula to Charles Stross's Saturn's Children, with a narrator, modifier cards to remix a story, and an Atlas studio for building your own worlds [11].

Two things make it a real alternative rather than a novelty. Stories are short and finite: a scene takes five to eight minutes and a story is one to three scenes, so you get endings rather than drift. And the free tier is generous: unlimited stories and turns, five catalog worlds, one character conversation a day. Fan is $7.99 a month for unlimited worlds and conversations [12].

Its content ceiling is PG-13 by default, with Mature worlds labeled R and carrying content warnings [13]. If you left AI Dungeon because you wanted less, not more, this is the one.

4. FableAI

FableAI (fableai.app, not the book app) describes itself as an AI text RPG with memory and multiplayer co-op, and claims more than 5,000 adventures [14]. Story Cards mark key narrative moments, the narrator rolls dice when an outcome is uncertain, and you can play solo or with friends. It has web, iOS and Android builds.

The site says forever free with optional subscriptions and gem packs; the App Store lists subscriptions from $2.99 to $33 and gem packs from $1.39 to $19.99 [15]. We could not read a content policy or a free daily cap from an official page, so treat those as unknown. The app rating is 13+.

5. Perchance AI RPG

If what you liked about AI Dungeon was the sandbox and what you disliked was the account, Perchance's AI RPG is the answer. The page describes itself as completely free and unlimited, with no sign-up, no login and no daily limits, funded by ads [16].

The cost of that freedom is continuity. An account is optional and, in Perchance's words, does not save or store any data related to your interactions. There is no published memory system and no published model. It is a wonderful thing to open for an hour and a poor place to keep a story for a month.

6. NovelAI

NovelAI is a prose engine with a text adventure mode, not a game. You get a document, a Lorebook, a memory field and an author's note, and a choice of models. The published tiers are Tablet at $10 a month, Scroll at $15 and Opus at $25, with Opus giving up to 28,672 tokens of context on the current models [17]. The text model lineup and release dates are documented, which is rare in this category [18].

Its terms contain no clause restricting adult fiction, and its image models are a large part of the product; since August 2026 the Opus tier has a usage limit on the newest image model only [19]. Choose it if you want to write, with the AI as a very capable co-author, rather than to be surprised.

7. DreamGen

DreamGen sits between NovelAI and AI Dungeon. It has role-play, story and scenario modes, a choose-the-next-step branching mode, and retry variants that preserve both versions so you can navigate between them [20]. Named models in the docs include GLM 5.2 and Gemma 4. Pricing is public: Starter $7.83 a month with 5,000 tokens of context, Advanced $19.35 with 15,000, Pro $48.30 with 30,000 [21].

Its terms prohibit only content that is illegal or involves minors, so adult fiction between adults is permitted [22]. One caution from our own checking: while reading the pricing FAQ in a browser, the page redirected us off-site twice. Read the pricing page yourself before you rely on the free-tier details.

8. KoboldAI

KoboldAI is not a service; it is free, open-source software you run yourself, with a browser-only Lite client you can use at lite.koboldai.net against any backend [23]. It has four modes, Story, Adventure, Chat and Instruct, plus Memory, World Info and Author's Note, and it loads any model you can find. KoboldCpp shipped version 1.121 on September 15, 2026 [24].

There is no content policy because there is no vendor. There is also no support line. If you are the kind of person who read AI Dungeon's advanced settings page and wanted more knobs, this is where the knobs are.

Not on the list, and why

SillyTavern is a self-hosted character-chat frontend rather than an adventure engine; it belongs in a Character.AI comparison. Sudowrite is a fiction-writing tool with no turn-based play loop. Talefy is an interactive story app closer to a visual novel than an adventure and is covered in our roleplay guides. Products that market themselves primarily on adult content were left out.

How to choose in five minutes

Ask yourself what you actually did in your last AI Dungeon session.

If you spent it steering and were tired by the end, you want structure: Nepenthe Play or Hidden Door.

If you spent it wishing for a dice roll that meant something, you want rules: Friends & Fables or FableAI.

If you spent it fighting the model's prose, you want the engine: NovelAI, DreamGen or KoboldAI.

If you spent it wondering why you needed an account, you want Perchance.

Then play one scene, not one session. A good story alternative will have moved on its own within ten exchanges. If it has not, it is a sandbox with a different logo.

If you want the sandbox but free and without an account, Perchance AI RPG. If you want maximum control over the model and prompt, NovelAI, KoboldAI or DreamGen.
Is there a free AI Dungeon alternative?
Yes. Perchance AI RPG is free, unlimited and needs no sign-up. KoboldAI Lite is free and open source but you supply the model. Hidden Door has a free tier with unlimited stories and turns across five catalog worlds. Nepenthe Play is free to browse and start, with welcome credits for new accounts.
Does AI Dungeon still have a free tier?
Yes. The Wanderer tier is free with a 4,000-token context, 25 memory-bank slots and no credits. Paid tiers start at $14.99 a month and raise context, memories and credits.
Which alternatives have real endings?
Nepenthe Play's stories are authored with routes and endings; Every Promise Binds, for example, has four of each. Hidden Door's stories run one to three scenes to a close. AI Dungeon, NovelAI, KoboldAI and DreamGen are open-ended by design: they end when you stop.
Which one is closest to AI Dungeon?
Perchance AI RPG for the feel of a free-text sandbox, and DreamGen or NovelAI for the prose-engine experience with your own settings. FableAI markets itself as an AI text RPG with memory and co-op and is the closest hosted product in spirit.
Can I play these on my phone?
All of the hosted ones run in a mobile browser. AI Dungeon, FableAI and Friends & Fables also have apps or install-to-home-screen support. SillyTavern and KoboldAI are self-hosted and need a machine or a hosted backend.
