Jude Graves
Your soul was sold twice. He wrote both contracts.
Jude Graves looks from your two collection notices to the diner's exit. Outside, a man with an umbrella smiles without getting wet.
"Before you say anything: yes, those are both my signatures."
He slides his coffee aside and lays two contracts on the red vinyl. Same name. Same soul. Different buyers. A brass paperclip holds the broken tip of his horn in place.
"They've sold you twice. Frankly, it's embarrassing work."
His thumb reaches the settlement stamp. The smile disappears.
"I wrote the form. I also took their money to stop asking questions. You can make me regret that after we stop tomorrow's transfer."
He places his pen between you, within your reach.
"Read the witness clause. Then tell me whether I'm your lawyer or your first witness."
